What is Global Education?
"Rich in tradition, and focused on the future, the Fort Thomas Independent School District provides engaging and challenging learning experiences which foster creativity, curiosity, and innovation, while inspiring all students to pursue lifelong learning and become productive members of the global community." - Fort Thomas Independent Schools Mission and Vision Statement
As members of the Fort Thomas Independent School community, our mission and vision statement encourages us to work to prepare our students for a world and job market that does not even exist yet. In doing so, we must help our students become adaptable to many situations, cultures, and opinions. Global education provides our students with opportunities to collaborate and take action with students throughout the world, thus aiding in our goal to foster creativity and innovation in our classrooms. In doing so, our students become more engaged and active citizens of not just the United States, but also the world, thus ensuring their success in all aspects of 21st century life. Specifically, a study by British group Ipsos/MORI found "...that people who learn about global issues feel more empowered to tackle them, rather than being overwhelmed by the extent of the problems." This can be achieved by modeling for students the skills of investigating the world, recognizing perspectives, communicating ideas, and taking action, as promoted by the Asia Society in its book Education for Global Competence: Preparing Our Youth to Engage the World, written by Veronica Boix Mansilla and Anthony Jackson. Fostering such global skills will in turn allow students to become global leaders, as argued by scholar Mark Juergensmeyer. |
