Local ResourcesGreater Cincinnati World Affairs Council - helps people in the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky region make international connections. This organization provides opportunities for global education, workforce training, volunteer opportunities, and keynote speakers that discuss modern global issues. For high school students, the GCWAC provides several academic opportunities to develop and display global competencies, such as Academic WorldQuest and Model APEC. Program are also available for all other levels of education.
University of Cincinnati's Global Engagement Department - helps connect international students with the programs offered at the University of Cincinnati, as well as provides students with opportunities to study abroad or find international co-op experiences. Northern Kentucky University's International Education Center - provides opportunities for students and staff to travel abroad, as well as opportunities for international students to study in the region, as methods of improving global understanding. University of Louisville's McConnell Center - offers public lecture series and civic education programs to develop more active citizens throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky, the United States, and the world. Students interested in public service should consider the McConnell Scholars Program, which provides a select group of students with extensive civic education experience and international exchange programs. University of Kentucky's International Studies Department - provides students with opportunities to expand their understanding and participation in global affairs, through courses, keynote speakers, volunteerism, and study abroad opportunities. Global Kentucky - created by Mapping the Nation, this resource analyzes Kentucky's role in the 21st century global market and communication networks. The site provides a comprehensive overview of the Kentucky Department of Education's efforts to improve global competencies through world language programs and teacher professional development. |
National and International ResourcesThe Asia Society - created the most comprehensive and useful explanation, study, and resources regarding global and education competencies that I have encountered thus far. This should be the starting place for all educators who want to know more about global education.
UN Global Education First Initiative - works to help all international children by first providing a quality education, and then opportunities to develop global citizenship skills and habits of mind. The Longview Foundation - helps connect students and teachers to the world through grants that provide opportunities for international exchanges and teacher preparation. The "Teachers Preparation Guide for a Global Age" resource provides global competency assessment tools that can be used in conjunction with those created by the Asia Society, as well as helpful hints on how to use technology to guide global education. Global Education (Australia) - contains several links and resources that can help better understand global education, including definitions and applications, as well as resources such as images, videos, developing country profiles, and monitoring of modern global issues. Edutopia - provides access to global education unit and lesson plans, assessment tools, helpful links, and case studies of schools effectively implementing global competencies. Mapping the Nation - provides educators, policy makers, and students with state-by-state analysis of global relationships and opportunities, as well as resources to help increase global connections and competencies. |
